If you have ever wondered what the beloved manga character Doraemon would look like through a De Stijl filter, then product designer Duncan Shotton may have the answer. By merging the time-travelling robotic cat with the distinctive style of the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, Doraemondrian fuses two otherwise unrelated elements together in a visual portmanteau.
Instantly recognisable from Mondrian’s stark compositions and Doraemon’s signature blue, the designer’s intention was to produce it as a series of prints but the character’s licensing agency hasn’t allowed him to do so yet. We can only hope that somewhere a blue cat is poised beside a multi-dimensional door and that he’ll show up to make the licensing executives see sense.
