In Miwa Yanagi’s “My Grandmothers” series (2000-9), the artist interviewed girls aged 14 to 20 years old about how they imagined themselves to be living in fifty years time. From the most noteworthy answers, she gathered, Yanagi prepared drawings which later became staged photographs that realised the envisioned futures of the interviewees.
Suffused with Yanagi’s surrealistic interpretation, this body of work assembles an array of vivid portraits that represent a collaborative depiction of how the teenage girls choose to see their future selves – from the television network tycoon to a nursemaid of the dying.
