Acclaimed for his comprehensive, aerial photographs that distil populated depictions of capitalism and globalisation, Andreas Gursky’s decision to photograph the Tokyo stock exchange was first prompted when he saw an image of the same subject in a newspaper.
Having since photographed stock exchanges in Hong Kong (1994), Singapore (1997), Chicago (1999), New York (2000) and Kuwait (2000), this image presents a densely crowded checkerboard of trade as well as being the first in a series of photographs typical of his attention.
